Six point Winch Monitoring System

January 6, 2017

A large offshore cable-laying company approached DLM to design a Winch Monitoring System to enable them to measure the line tension on the Winch cables used to steer their cable-laying vessel.

DLM Engineers designed a Winch Monitoring System comprising of four 60-tonne Running Line Monitors each with a local display for showing the load on the line. These fed back to a central HMI display in the control room which had a graphical view of the vessel along with winch lines and their associated line tension.

The central display had the capability of internally data logging as well as retransmitting the tension values in serial RS485 format, along with remote access via a web browser when connected by Ethernet.
