Back when I first walked through the DLM doors as a work experience placement, I never imagined that one day I’d be running the show!
My enduring memory of working at DLM during college and university holidays was the team. The people I’d worked with were a brilliant group with a wide range of skills and talents who pulled together to deliver outstanding results for our clients.
When the opportunity arose to buy the company, I knew it was something I wanted to embrace.
In fact, whilst I am the MD, DLM remains what it has always been – a close-knit team of people working together to achieve amazing things.
So what is it like to work at DLM and why should you consider joining the team?
Creating a people-first culture
In our experience, our people work best when they are trusted and supported to achieve their individual goals and potential.
Because we are a very niche engineering business, it’s unlikely that people have directly comparable work experience. Your mindset and attitude are the most important things we look for.
Our team:
- Are laser-focused on delivering a great customer experience
- Demonstrate incredible attention to detail
- Are collectively focused on continuous improvement and problem-solving
- Work collaboratively with people across the organisation with a “one team” mindset
- Are driven by a desire to succeed individually and collectively
How we look after our people
As a business we have worked hard to build a resilient business that offers job security for our team. That’s achieved through careful business management, investing to create financial resilience and a proactive people strategy. That might sound like a buzzword but at DLM it describes how we prepare our people for the future.
A rolling programme of apprentices means we can grow our own talent based on the specialist skills we need. New team members are set up to succeed through a comprehensive induction and training programme – but it doesn’t stop there.
Many of our team have been with us for years, having been supported to upskill and develop throughout their career. Regular 121s ensure everybody has the time and opportunity to discuss ideas for improvement with their manager, exploring how they can contribute to the overall business goals.
Future-proofing skills
In addition to our apprentice and trainee development plans, our teams have built strong relationships with the University of Southampton, actively inviting students to the workshop and office to gain insight. This is an area we are committed to growing further in the coming years.
It’s not all work work work
There’s a well-known saying that “Teamwork makes the dream work”, which is something we certainly believe at DLM. We have created a strong team culture that recognises the importance of giving everyone in our business the chance to get to know their colleagues outside of their work.
From summer BBQs to Christmas parties, celebratory events and sporting pursuits, being able to kick back and relax with colleagues means they forge deeper relationships.
